Vendor Spotlight: Lofthouse Living

It’s a love of London, trees, and just about everything else that made the Lofthouse Living dream come true for entrepreneurs Jennifer and Jesse Lofthouse.

Originally from Winnipeg, the couple were drawn to London and, after getting to know the city and its people, knew they needed to stay. Their already-successful blog helped pave the way for a store full of eclectic treasures and memories.

We spoke to them about how they made their dreams a reality, so take a read — these two clearly care about their work and their community.

What inspired you to start you business or creative endeavour?

Lofthouse Living started as a small blog (JLOFTHOUSE) in Winnipeg that traveled the city seeking young businesses (local) to feature.  It was a small way to build relationships with shop owners and learn from their experiences (as it was always a dream of ours to open a shop of our own one day).  Through these blog features we learned , we were inspired and best of all we formed some beautiful relationships along the way.  This blog planted the seed for what now has grown into Lofthouse Living the little shop at the corner of Queens & Richmond.   

What is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?

With our physical shop, basically letting London know where we are!  Once we get Londoners in our door, we know we can find something they’ll love – but if they don’t know where we are – they’ll never get to experience Lofthouse Living.  We’ve found social media and word of mouth has been most successful for spreading the word of our little shop.

What is your most memorable moment?

Being a brand spankin’ new store and having insecurities whether or not the public will fall in love with the shop.  So with that being said, our most memorable moments have been having (many) returning customers!  These fabulous souls have taken a chance (and effort) to come in, connect with us, and allow us to meet their needs on a product/service level, not only that, they have returned for more! That has truly been the most memorable and rewarding experiences to date.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Be as AUTHENTIC as much as you possibly can.  Use your own quirky wording, original photos, your messy handwriting – any way you can create a brand that is yours.  No one can take away the broken down raw YOU.  The world is over-saturated with cloned brands/blogs/images/stores it’s very easy to get caught up in what is trending – but if you stay true to what you love and what makes your work yours – we think your brand will thrive.

Why did you decide to choose the location of London, Ontario for your business?

We made the move to London for school, after a couple years of living here – we fell in love with the city.  It’s not too big, not too small – just right.

What’s your favourite part of being a local business?

MEETING NEW PEOPLE!  With that, getting to share our passion with all who walk through our door.  We put a lot of heart and soul into the product in our shop – nothing is there “just because” so to see those pieces leave the store to be enjoyed in someone's home brings us a lot of joy.
